How to Feed Mini Thai Crabs

Mini Thai crabs, also known as Red Claw or Red Clawed crabs, are native to Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. They have blotchy red shells, and grow up to two inches long. These crabs are a welcome addition to a fish tank because they eat leftover food and plant matter, keeping the tank much cleaner. However, they can also be kept as pets. In this case, you'll need to make sure you provide the right diet for your crab.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the tube feeder to the inside edge of the tank. Make sure that it's not directly above any tank decorations, such as large stones, ornaments or shells; these objects might get in the way of the food drop.

    • 2

Obtain a selection of food for the crab. A Mini Thai crab particularly likes live crickets, which can be fed to it in a dry cardboard box. However, food such as shrimp pellets or worms can be added directly to the crab's tank.

Feed the crab small amounts of food at least two or three times a day. For one crab, drop a worm and a couple of shrimp pellets down the tube feeder. Monitor how much the crab eats and increase or decrease this quantity depending on its appetite.

Provide scraps of vegetables or plant on the floor of the tank. Find out what the crab likes to eat by experimenting with different vegetables. Start with boiled spinach, peas and zucchini. Add small quantities to the tank and watch what it consumes. Remove the food it doesn't like, and continue to add more of what it does.
