How to Attract Elk & Deer

Whether you're hiding in a blind and hunting deer and elk or sitting in your yard and hoping they'll pass by for a good show, attracting these animals requires patience and a few simple techniques. Deer and elk are both very skittish animals that may flee at the slightest detection of human presence. Attracting them requires a slow and careful approach.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider placing doe or female elk urine around your location, which will attract male deer and elk to the spot. If you don't have deer or elk urine handy, then you can purchase them at a local hunting store. This technique is typically used by hunters, who may supplement the urine with other scent wicks.

    • 2

Place corn, pellets, minerals or salt in a location in order to attract both male and female deer and elk. It is illegal to shoot deer after you put these materials on the ground as it is considered baiting. This technique should only be used by those who wish to observe the deer or elk.

    • 3

Plant certain foliage that deer like to eat, such as ladino clover, red clover or orchard grass. These types of plants will attract the animals, although this will take place over a longer period of time. Deer typically have more selective diets than elk. Elk will feed on almost any grasses, sedges, forbs or shrubs. Deer have more selective diets that consist of softer grasses and plants.

    • 4

Clear away all traces of human belongings. For example, if you want deer to come onto your lawn to eat, then you shouldn't leave toys or trash in the yard as this might be a sign of a danger to the deer.

    • 5

Cultivate trees so that deer and elk can seek shade or shelter in a certain area. Both animals need rest and shade throughout the day and so having the proper amount of edible plants and trees can help provide a good habitat for deer.
