Record your observations. Note the bug's color, size, shape, odd markings or patterns, number of legs, wings or antennae and the location of its discovery. If possible, take a picture of the bug with a camera phone or digital camera.
Bring a photo of the bug with you, if available, to a local library and visit the reference section. Ask a librarian to help you find insect picture books. Browse through the pictures and look for bugs with a curved nose. Read the captions or summaries near the image to help with identification.
Access the Bug Finder on the InsectIdentification.org website. This resource helps identify bugs based on physical characteristics and location. Use the menu to enter the bug's primary and secondary body colors, type and location. Click "Search Database" to view pictures of bugs matching the description.
Contact the entomology department at a university in your area by phone or email and inquire about the steps needed to identify bugs. You might be required to submit a photo of the bug along with a description of the creature and the location of its discovery.
