How to Make a Rabbit Pen

A rabbit pen gives your pet the freedom to explore the great outdoors while still ensuring its safety. It will also allow your rabbit to get the exercise it needs to keep it happy and healthy. You should always ensure that your rabbit has plenty of access to shade and water while inside the pen as well as plenty of supervision.

Plan your pen on paper first. Plans for your rabbit pen should include its size and shape as well as placement. According to Dr. Richard K. Davis, a veterinarian and owner of Knoxville Animal Clinic, a square or rectangular pen will suffice fine as long as the area you've chosen will accommodate these shapes, as they are the easiest to build. Make sure that your placement of the pen will allow for access to shade at all times, as well as fresh water.

Cut your chicken wire. For a 4-by-6-foot pen you will need the two lengths of chicken wire that are 4-feet-long and three six-feet-long. You will be assembling these pieces into an open-topped rectangular cube with two 4-feet-long sides, two 6-feet-long sides and a 6-foot-long floor. The floor piece is necessary to keep your rabbit from tunneling out.

Install the metal fencing stakes. These are the pieces that will anchor your pen to the ground and add stability to the corners. Mark out the placement of your stakes according to how you will be orienting your pen and then pound them into the ground with a mallet or hammer. You can also add a few garden stakes along the side for added structure.

Attach one side of the chicken wire to a metal stake with a zip tie. To do this, simply run a large zip tie around the stake, through the chicken wire and pull tightly. Add two more so that you have attached the chicken wire at three points along the stake. Pull the chicken wire taut and repeat the process on the second stake to create the first side. Continue this process until all of the chicken wire has been attached to the stakes.

Attach the floor to the pen using the clamps and clamping tool per the tool's directions. After attaching the floor, repeat the clamping process at each corner to ensure that the sides are fully attached to each other. This will prevent the rabbit from finding a gap and escaping.
