Things You'll Need
- Black cardboard
- Magnifying glass
- Insecticides
- Insect repellent
Instructions
Identify areas where chiggers are living or could be living. Since they are microscopic, the naked eye cannot see them individually. For the best way to test an area, place a black piece of cardboard or white saucer vertically on the ground. If chiggers are present, they will rush over to the object and accumulate on the upper edge; identify them using a magnifying glass. Look in low, damp areas with thick vegetation.
Spray chigger-affected lawn areas with proper insecticides. Bifenthrin, cyfluthrin and deltamethrin are the common names of outdoor insecticides proven to work on chiggers. Different insecticides require different uses, so follow instructions. Also check to ensure they will not harm other small pets or animals.
Mow weedy places and areas where chiggers could be present. Before mowing, spray a DEET-based insect repellent on your skin and clothing for protection. Wear proper clothing to protect from bites, which includes long-sleeve shirts, long pants and boots. Mowing thick vegetation areas will kill the chiggers living there and prevent them from coming back.
Clean any clothing worn in a chigger-infested area. Soak the clothing in hot, soapy water to kill any attached chiggers. (Chiggers can survive water cooler than 125 degrees Fahrenheit.) Also take a hot, soapy bath or shower to kill any chiggers on your skin.
