Instructions
Observe the caterpillar and use a pen or pencil to note its characteristics on a small notebook. Jot down the caterpillar's size, other distinctive colors or odd markings, the location where it was discovered and a description of its food choice, if available. It can also be beneficial to take a photograph of the caterpillar with a camera-enabled cell phone or a digital camera. Notes and pictures about the caterpillar will come in handy as you perform your search.
Go to Discover Life's caterpillar identification website. This online resource helps identify caterpillars by placing a check mark next to characteristics that describe the mysterious creature. Place a check mark next to the caterpillar's main body color and select "Striped" for the main body pattern. Place additional check marks next to other characteristics that match the caterpillar, such as its hair density and distinct features. Click "Search" to view pictures and data about the caterpillar.
Access Insect Identification's website. This resource helps identify insects and spiders based on the the creature's location and physical appearance. Choose the caterpillar's primary and secondary colors using the drop-down menu selector. Be sure to choose "Insect" as the bug type and choose the respective state where you discovered the caterpillar. Click "Search the Database" to view pictures of insects, which might include caterpillars with a white, smooth black stripes.
Visit your local library. Go to the reference section of the library and ask a librarian to help you locate reference materials related to insect identification. Some libraries offer access to special reference books about insects native to a particular area. Browse through the books and look for pictures of the mysterious caterpillar. Pay close attention to pictures of striped-caterpillars.
