Things You'll Need
- PVC-coated wire fencing with 1/2- by 1/2- by 1-inch spacing
- Wire cutters
- Stainless steel wire 14 gauge
- Pliers
- 4 small clips
- 18- by 18-inch tray 3/4 inch deep
Instructions
Cut four pieces of PVC-coated wire fencing 18 inches wide by 24 inches tall. The 1-inch spacing of the bars should run horizontally. Cut the wire so that the edges are clean.
Attach the four pieces together to form a box 24 inches tall and 18 inches wide. Use the 14-gauge wire, pliers and wire cutters to connect the edges by looping the wire tightly around the connection point with the pliers and cutting the excess wire.
Cut two more pieces of wire fencing 18 inches by 18 inches. This will be the top and bottom of the cage.
Attach the top of the cage with the 14-gauge wire using the same process as the side walls in step two. Flip the cage over and attach the bottom of the cage so that it is 1 inch, or two mesh rows, inside of the cage. The cage should now be a solid box.
Determine which side will be the front of the cage and cut the 1 inch overhang off of the bottom. Just cut it off on the side that will be the front, leave the other three sides. This provides a space where you can slide the tray under the cage to collect the sugar glider's waste for easy cleaning. The tray will rest on the floor below the cage.
About halfway up the front of the cage cut a hole for the door. The door should be large enough to allow for toys and in cage cleaning. A good size is 10 inches tall by 8 inches wide. Remember to cut the hole so that the edges are smooth.
Cut a new piece of fence wire for the door since the piece removed from the cage will not have smooth edges.
Attach the door by making loops of 14 gauge wire down one end of the doorway. The door can open whichever way you choose. Place the loops on the vertical edge for a normal door, on the top edge for an upwards opening flap or on the bottom edge for a downward opening flap. Make the wire loops tight, but not so tight that the door won't open.
Insert the tray into the bottom of the cage through the opening in the front and use spring snap lanyard clips or snap clips to keep the door closed.
