How to Know If a Hippo Is a Boy or a Girl?

A hippopotamus is a large, semi-aquatic, herbivorous mammal that is generally found in sub-Saharan Africa. Hippos are known for their excellent swimming skills and can hold their breath for nearly five minutes while submerged underwater. As the third largest living mammal on the planet, hippos can grow up to 13-feet long and can weigh up to 3 ½ tons.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare the size of the hippo to other hippos close by. Generally, male hippopotamuses are somewhat larger and lengthier than female hippos.

    • 2

Note the length or the hippos tusks. Though both male and female hippopotamuses have tusks, usually the females' tusks are somewhat shorter than the males.

    • 3

Observe the hippopotamus carefully from a distance to see if you can identify its' genitals. Note that it may be easier to identify the males' genitals than the females.

    • 4

Watch during dry season, this is the time period when hippos mate. Also pay attention to the wet season; this is when female hippos will give birth. It is not uncommon to see baby hippos close to their mothers at this time.

Pay attention the interactions amongst the hippos. Male hippopotamuses tend to be slightly more aggressive than their female counterparts. Groups of hippos generally consist of a large male, and the other members are female and their young. If another male invades his mating territory, the leader will fight off rivals.
