How to Tell a Male Ostrich From a Female

The ostrich is the largest living bird in the world. It is a flightless bird that is originally native to Africa. Though the ostrich cannot fly, it can run at a speed of 40 miles per hour. This bird is so large that its egg can weigh up to 5 lbs. and be the size of a small bird. When people are interested in looking in determining the sex, there are certain features of the ostrich that you must look for. Feathers, height and size are all factors that determine the sex of this large animal.

      Look at the feathers of the ostrich. Male ostriches have black with white tipped plumes. Females have light brown and gray feathers. Males have darker feathers since it sits on the unborn egg at night while females will sit on the egg during the day. The females will be able to stay cooler in the hot sun with lighter colored feathers.

      Check the size of the ostrich. The female will be slightly smaller than the male. An adult male can grow to be 400 lbs. while females can go to be 350 lbs.

      Look at the beak coloring. During breeding seasons, the beaks of the ostrich will change color. A male ostrich will have bright red beaks, shins and necks (sometimes). Females will have a silver, grayish colored beak and shins during breeding season.
