What Works to Get Rid of Skunk Smell?

When a skunk is frightened it sprays an oily liquid from glands under its tail. The spray can travel up to 10 feet and has a pungent odor that can linger for days. Because it is an oil it is rapidly absorbed by most things it comes in contact with and is difficult to remove.
  1. Mixture

    • Make a solution to remove skunk smell by mixing 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 2 teaspoons of dishwashing soap. Add the mixture to a bath to remove the scent from the hair and skin of humans and pets. A second bath may be required to completely remove the smell as some of the oil may initially be released into the water.

    How it Works

    • The dish soap can help to break down the oils released by the skunk, just like it does with cooking oil on dishes. Hydrogen peroxide helps to break down the chemicals that cause the smell in the first place. If hydrogen peroxide cannot be used, or if the solution is being used on fabric, white vinegar can be substituted as it will accomplish the same purpose. Baking soda helps neutralize the existing odor.

    Hard Surfaces

    • For hard surfaces such as concrete, tile or the exterior of a car, the solution is fairly simple. Mix one part bleach to nine parts water, then spray it or dump it on the surface. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Bleach is highly toxic and should break down the oil, eliminate the chemicals and reduce the smell. Bleach, however, is highly toxic and should not be used to clean humans or animals, nor should it be used to clean fabrics unless those fabrics are completely white.

    Fabrics

    • For fabrics such as clothing, the interior of a car or carpet it is best to hire a professional. The best option for clothing is a dry cleaner and the best option for carpet or a car is a professional cleaning service. If these options aren't desirable, try the cleaning solution recommended for bathing, but substitute vinegar for hydrogen peroxide as peroxide will bleach many fabrics. But because fabric is so absorbent, it may take many washes to remove the smell.
