How to: Deer Feeders

Bring local deer nearer to you by creating your own deer feeders. Deer are beautiful and graceful creatures that are fascinating to watch from afar. Whether you are an observer or a hunter, simple deer feeders draw the deer in and can be made with basic supplies from your hardware supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a hole into the bottom of your bucket. The hole will need to be about 1/4 inch larger in diameter than your broom handle.

    • 2

Use a hammer to nail two nails into the sides 6 inches from one end of the broomstick, directly opposite each other. Be sure that the nails are sticking out at least an inch from the broom.

    • 3

Slide the broom handle into the bucket (with the long end facing downward) and through the hole. The nails will keep the broom handle from going all the way through.

    • 4

Tie the rope to the bucket handle using a secure knot of your choice. Then, tie the other end of the rope to a tree branch so that the long end of the broom handle is hanging about 4 feet from the ground. Be sure that you find a tree branch that is close to a well-used watering hole for deer, and that the branch is well-concealed and shaded for the animals, as recommended by A Heavenly Place.

    • 5

Fill the bucket full of deer feed (you can also use just plain corn), then put a lid on the bucket to keep it free of moisture and bugs.

    • 6

Sit back and watch the deer. When the deer hits the broom handle, deer feed will fall to the ground.
