How to Feed Fire-Bellied Toads

Fire-bellied toads eat live feeder insects, and if you provide your pet with a varied diet that is high in nutrients, it will display bright colors. Always gut load the prey, preferably with commercial bug grub and collard greens or other vegetable matter. Crickets, locust hoppers and wingless flies sometimes venture into the water and drown, so don't feed too many in one session. Feed adult fire-bellied toads on alternate days and babies every day.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a different type of live food each day, or alternate between a minimum of two types of insects. Do not feed your fire-bellied toad more than four insects per feeding session.

    • 2

Dust the selected feeder insects with a calcium and vitamin supplement and introduce them to your fire-bellied toad's terrarium.

    • 3

Place worms in a dish on the land section of your terrarium, and feed other insects in quantities that your toad can eat within a few minutes to prevent drowning and soiling of the water.

    • 4

Remove uneaten crickets or locust hoppers from the water because your toad will not go back to them once they are floating. However, it will eat wingless flies from the water's surface.

    • 5

Feed wax worms occasionally as a treat. They are very high in fat, and unsuitable as a staple dietary item.
