Things You'll Need
- Freshwater pond
- Filtration system
- Turtle food
Instructions
Consider the climate of your area. In nature, alligator snapping turtles live in freshwater habitats in the southwestern states. The temperature of the pond water will need to stay between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. You may need to use a heater to maintain the water temperature.
Modify the depth of your pond if necessary. The turtle will spend most of its time underwater, but it needs to be able to periodically come up to breathe. The pond needs to have a large area that is relatively shallow, about 7 to 10 inches deep, for the turtle to sit comfortably. Other areas of the pond can be deeper. The pond should be as large as possible. You want to be able to fit at least 100 gallons of water in the pond.
Remove debris around the pond. The turtle can get trapped under rocks and logs, or choke on small rocks. Keep the habitat uncluttered.
Install the water filtration system. Alligator snapping turtles excrete a lot of waste, and this needs to be filtered out. Otherwise the water will become murky and create an unhealthy environment for your turtle. It is also a good idea to manually remove any visible waste, and to completely change the water in the pond at least every two weeks.
Feed your turtle as directed, based on its size. Your turtle will not be able to find food on its own in a captive environment, so you will need to provide for it.
