How to Feed a Pet Newt Grubs

Newts, also known as salamanders, live in the wild but have become popular as pets. Newts thrive on a variety of live food, such as grubs, in the wild, and should be fed the same diet when nurtured as pets. Grubs are the larvae of beetles, and they provide newts with an excellent source of nutrition.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the grub food from a pet shop, and feed it to your newt every two days.

    • 2

Dust the grubs with calcium, vitamin and mineral supplement powder at least once a week, before offering it to the newt. Sprinkle a pinch of supplement powder in a small jar and place the grub in it. Place the lid on the jar and shake it to coat the newt with the powder. Open the jar and offer the supplement-coated grub to your newt.

You can also feed grubs to the newt by holding the prey with tongs. Do not offer killed prey. Newts are attracted by movement and will not touch food that doesn't move.

If your newt does not eat all the grubs that it is offered, do not provide new food until it has eaten all the leftover grubs.
