How to Prevent Skunk Spray

Skunk spray is an overwhelming odor that can be difficult to remove from clothing and other household objects or decorations. If you're plagued by skunk visitors near your home, you have a few options when attempting to prevent them from spraying or invading your property.

Instructions

  1. Preventing Skunks and Spray

    • 1

Remove all of the garbage from the area surrounding your home, as skunks are drawn to food and other trash that may give off scents that attract them. Keep your food for garbage pickup in airtight containers to best keep the scent away from the surrounding area and potential skunks.

    • 2

Rid any insects or pesticides and rodents that are lurking around your home (or wherever you're trying to remove the skunk). You can purchase insect deterrent or natural diatomaceous earth, which is a nontoxic material made with freshwater organisms, crushed up fossils and marine life to help rid and kill the insects when spread around the yard or other area. Diatomaceous earth is available at many home improvement and home and garden stores.

    • 3

Place mothballs in the surrounding problem areas where the skunks are lurking. Though the smell may not be pleasant, it may help deter the skunks from visiting your yard.

    Removing Skunk Spray

    • 4

Mix 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1 tsp. of a liquid soap of your choice and 1/4 cup of baking soda in a nonplastic container or bottle. Allow the mixture to bubble. Test the mixture on a fabric or another surface ahead of time before using it on your material with the skunk spray.

    • 5

Apply the mixture to the fabric or other surface where the skunk sprayed while the mixture is still bubbling and active. Scrub and wash the fabric or other surface and simply rinse the surface completely with tap water after you are finished.

    • 6

Store the mixture if you plan to use it later. Do not store this mixture in plastic bottles, as the ingredients include hydrogen peroxide and baking soda within it, which may cause the bottle to erode.
