How to Learn About Rhinos

Children and adults alike have long been fascinated with the great rhinoceros. There are five types of rhinos in existence: Sumatran, Javan, black, white, and Indian. Rhinos are an endangered species and there are very few rhinos who still exist in the wild. Most rhinos live in rhinoceros sanctuaries or zoos, where they are protected and cared for by trained professionals. If you are interested in rhinos, there are several ways you can learn more about them at home or abroad.

Visit your local library and check out a few books about rhinos. Read a variety of books, including textbooks and informative books, to give you a well-rounded basic understanding of rhinos.

Spend an afternoon at your local zoo to learn about rhinos. Most zoos have at least one rhino, although some zoos have several different types of rhinos. Zoo employees sometimes give feeding demonstrations or informative talks about different animals. Call your zoo ahead of time to find out what the feeding schedule for the rhinos is and if visitors are allowed to watch. If your zoo does not offer special rhino exhibit speeches or public feedings, find a zoo employee who works near the rhinos and ask if she can talk with you for a few minutes about the feeding and living habits of their local rhino.

Rent a documentary video about rhinos. A video documentary will give you an up-close, personal look at the life of rhinos both in the wild and in captivity. Many documentaries follow animals closely in their natural habitat and will give you a chance to see how rhinos survive without humans present.

Read several rhino websites to learn new and interesting facts. Many rhino websites feature pictures, videos and even interviews with rhino professionals to give you as much information as possible about the life of a rhino.

Visit a rhino sanctuary. If you enjoy traveling, one of the most effective and powerful ways to learn about rhinos is to visit them at a rhino sanctuary. Rhino sanctuaries are designed to protect rhinos from poachers and natural predators in the wild in an attempt to prevent rhinos from becoming extinct.
