Do Polar Bears Drink Water?

The polar bear, the closest relative to the brown bear, is the Arctic's top predator. With a weight of up to 1,700 pounds, a polar bear's diet consists of high fat but without any water.

    • Polar bears live in the circumpolar north where temperatures are as low as -50 degrees Fahrenheit. To thrive in these conditions, polar bears have two thick layers of fur and one layer of blubber for insulation.

    What They Eat

    • The diet of a polar bear has a lot to do with water consumption or lack thereof. Polar bears have a high fat/low protein diet. Polar bears' favorite food is ringed seals. Although polar bears hunt and eat seals, they only consume the seal fat.

    What They Drink

    • Polar bears rarely drink water as most of the drinkable freshwater is frozen. With a high fat/low protein diet, the Polar bears' water supply comes a chemical reaction when fats are broken down.
