How to Care for Water Frogs

Frogs are simple pets for any home. Frogs stay in the aquarium, and entertain their owners as they swim and play in the water. Their diet consists of worms, bugs and fish, and all of their food is purchased from the pet store. The aquarium maintenance is quick, but it is a little bit messy. Once the tank is set up and the frogs are inside, all the frogs require is food every few days, and the tank cleaned periodically.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase your tank. The tank needs 10 gallons per frog, so the frogs have living room.

    • 2

Pour 1 gallon of water into the fish tank, and add 10 drops of bleach. Use a washcloth, and scrub the inside of the tank with this solution. Dump out the water, and rinse thoroughly. Add a gallon of water to the tank and 3 tablespoons of salt. Clean the tank with the saltwater, pour out the water and rinse thoroughly.

    • 3

Hook up an aquarium air pump and water filtering system in the tank. Frogs like the extra oxygen in the tank and clean water.

    • 4

Drain the tank half way each week, and refill with clean water. This keeps ammonia from building up in the water. While the water is low, scrape the squeegee over the glass removing any algae from the glass.

    • 5

Cover the bottom of the aquarium with a one inch layer of gravel. Build up a hill of aquarium gravel on one side of the aquarium for a dry area for the frog. Most frogs spend some time out of the water.

    • 6

Plant some water plants from the pet store in the water. Frogs like hiding around, on and under plants.

    • 7

Keep the temperature under 90 degrees. Frogs don't like extreme heat, so watch the temperature of the tank. They prefer water between 65 to 74 degrees.

    • 8

Purchase food for the frog from the pet store. If you put guppies in a tank beside the frog tank, scoop up a net full of guppies, and dump the guppies in the frog tank. Aquatic frogs love them. Get cricket dusting powder. It gives the frog more vitamins and minerals in their diet.

    • 9

Refrain from feeding raw meat to the frog. Never feed a frog hamburger or liver pieces. It causes muscle problems and vitamin deficiencies in frogs.

    • 10

Remember, ladybugs and praying mantis are never fed to frogs. Lady bugs are like poison to a frog, and praying mantis try attacking the frog.

    • 11

Feed frogs five or six insects every three days. Remove dead insects within a few hours after feeding frogs.

    • 12

Separate frogs from fish and snails. Only add fish to the frog aquarium for food. They carry worms that infest frogs, and kill them.

    • 13

Add decorative rocks, ships and other items in the aquarium. Frogs like hiding places.
