Homemade Refrigerator Incubator Plans

Using an old refrigerator as the frame for an incubator is not only a cost-efficient way to build an incubator, but it's also a very green project, which recycles an otherwise unusable refrigerator.
  1. Waste

    • Remove all of the unnecessary parts from the old refrigerator. This means removing the cooling system, compressor and other functioning units. All that is needed is the outer shell and the shelving system inside the refrigerator.

    Heat

    • A heating element and thermostat must be added to the unit. Heat tape and heat bulbs are options. It is important to install a thermostat that automatically adjusts for variations in temperature to ensure temperature stability.

    Concern

    • If there is freon in the cooling system, empty it correctly; you can't simply cut the lines and allow it to evaporate into the atmosphere. If freon is still in the lines, have a trained professional remove it. It is better to get a refrigerator from which the freon has already been removed, or one that did not use a freon system.
