What Is the Crab & Lobster Skeletal System?

Crabs and lobsters belong to the crustacea subphylum. Crustaceans' skeletal systems are on the outside of the body and are known as exoskeletons. The exoskeletons of crabs and lobsters are made of chitin, which is responsible for making the shells hard.
  1. Protection

    • The exoskeleton's main function is to protect the soft body of crabs, lobsters and other crustaceans. The hard shells of crabs and lobsters protect against predators and prevent injuries.

    Structure

    • The exoskeleton maintains structure for crabs and lobsters. It is the framework for connecting the organs to one another.

    Molting

    • Molting occurs when crabs and lobsters produce a new shell and discard the old shell. This is important because exoskeletons do not grow with the animal. A lobster can molt up to seven times during its first year of life.
