How to Hold Down a Slippery Eel

Eels can be used as pets, for food, or for scientific research. There are many types of freshwater and saltwater eels, each with its own unique features. Differences in color, size, body type, and skin texture differentiate the various species. One common trait among many species is the slipperiness of the skin. Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a tray of shallow water to contain the eel. Choose a tray that is long enough to contain the entire length of the eel and wide enough for your hands to comfortably grasp the eel. Pour saltwater or freshwater, depending on the species of eel, into the tray until there is a 1/2-inch layer covering the bottom.

    • 2

Use a net to capture the eel you wish to hold down. Scoop the eel out of its tank and carefully dump it out of the net and into the tray.

    • 3

Put on the rubber gloves. Grasp one hand towel in each hand to absorb the slime and to get a better grip on the eel.

    • 4

Grab the eel loosely with both hands. Place one hand between 2 and 4 inches above the end of the tail and the other hand between 2 and 4 inches below the head. Make sure you grasp the eel close enough to the head so it can't bite you.

    • 5

Hold the eel in place. Increase the firmness of your grip if the eel attempts to escape.
