How to Feed Baby Raccoons

If you find a baby raccoon alone, it can be very tempting to take it home as a pet. Make sure to leave it alone for 10 minutes before touching it to see if its mother returns to get the baby. If the mother does not come back, you should put on protective gloves before picking up the raccoon. It is best to give the raccoon to a wildlife center, but it is possible to feed a baby raccoon if absolutely necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Line a cardboard box with blankets or towels. A baby raccoon is not able to digest food unless he is warm.

    • 2

Fill a baby bottle with 10 cc's of kitten or puppy replacement milk if the raccoons eyes are closed. If the eyes are open, fill a baby bottle with 1 can evaporated milk, 1 raw egg yolk, 1 tbs. clear corn syrup, 1 jar baby banana food, and a full eye dropper of liquid vitamins. The liquid vitamins should not contain iron.

    • 3

Warm the baby bottle in a microwave. Test it on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot.

    • 4

Put a nipple on the bottle that is meant for a premature baby.

    • 5

Put protective gloves on, and hold the baby raccoon upright on your lap. Feed the baby raccoon the bottle.

    • 6

Put the raccoon back in its box for 10 minutes.

    • 7

Lay out a pee pad and put the raccoon on it. Rub the raccoon's abdomen with a warm, damp cloth. The cloth simulates a mother raccoon's tongue. Mother raccoons lick their baby's stomach to encourage the baby to urinate and defecate.

    • 8

Repeat this process every two hours from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. if the baby raccoon's eyes are closed. If the eyes are open, feed the baby every three hours during daylight.
