How to Tell a Female Musk Ox From a Male

Musk ox are large, hairy wild animals with horns. They live in cold climates including Greenland and Canada. Their wooly hair helps keep them warm. Musk ox, both male and female are sociable and prefer to travel in herds, made up of at least 10 other oxes. There are slight differences between the male and female musk ox. With some analyzing you will be able to tell a female musk ox from a male.

      Look at the length of the musk ox body. The male musk ox is up to eight feet long and four and a half feet tall. The female musk ox is smaller at six and a half long and slightly shorter than four feet.

      Determine how much musk ox weigh. The female musk ox can weigh from 500 to 700 pounds while males are heavier at 800 pounds. If the male becomes overweight it can reach 1,200 pounds.

      Notice the size of the horns on the musk ox. Male musk ox will have larger horns than females. A male's horns reach across his forehead, while the female's horns do not.
