Food for Sea Urchins

Sea urchins are frequently raised in captive environments, both as food animals and as ornamental pets. Underfed sea urchins will become infertile and may die of starvation; proper feeding is essenital for the animal's overall well-being.
  1. Herbivore or Omnivore?

    • With very few exceptions, sea urchins are strictly herbivorous. A few species will also eat small quantities of meat, but it is an unnecessary component of a sea urchin's diet.

    Brown Seaweeds

    • Brown seaweeds are an ideal staple food for sea urchins. Good choices include laminaria, egregia and giant kelp.

    Carrots

    • While carrots are not a natural food for sea urchins, they provide a similar profile of carotenoid vitamins and carbohydrates.

    Potatoes

    • Peeled, cut potatoes are a good occasional treat for captive sea urchins.

    Meats

    • While meat is unnecessary, some owners may give small amounts of chicken, shellfish or fish to their sea urchins. These can easily cloud the water and pollute the tank.
