How to Make Ruby Throated Hummingbird Food

The ruby throated hummingbird is the most common North American hummingbird. Ruby throated hummingbirds are solitary. They are also aggressive, territorial and will defend a food source, such as a hummingbird feeder. The nectar from flowering trees and flowers is its main source of food. The hummingbird will also eat insects, such as flies and spiders. They seem prefer the color red and are partial to red flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a hummingbird feeder. Choose one that is easy to clean and maintain. Selecting one that has a perch will allow the hummingbird to rest and conserve its energy. Many feeders are red, the color that attracts hummingbirds.

    • 2

Use one part sugar to four parts water; 1/4 cup sugar and one cup water. Boil for two minutes. Cool completely and fill the reservoir in the feeder. Do not use honey, as it can ferment too quickly and harm the hummingbird. Do not use red food coloring or food coloring of any type as this can also be harmful to hummingbirds.

    • 3

Store any unused portion in the refrigerator. Do not keep it longer than one week.

    • 4

Hang the hummingbird feeder. Beware of placing the feeder too close to a window as the bird can crash into the glass. Place curtains behind the glass or a bright sticker to alert the hummingbird to the window hazard. The feeder can also be placed near a garden.
