Information About the Mealworms Habitat

Mealworms are the pupa stage of darkling beetles. These worms are raised commercially as food for lizards and birds. Mealworm habitats are easy to create and to maintain. For a reptile owner, raising mealworms is an effective way to save money on pet care.
  1. Food

    • Mealworms receive all the water they need from food sources. Wheat bran is the standard food source for captive mealworms.

    Substrate

    • Food doubles as substrate for mealworms. They will both live in and eat crushed wheat bran flakes. Worms will need around 3 inches of substrate; this allows them to bury themselves.

    Containers

    • Mealworms are kept in plastic storage containers or sweater boxes. Drill very small holes for airflow.

    Temperature

    • Mealworms thrive at temperatures around 70 to 80 degrees F. Place worms in a refrigerator to delay development and extend life by a few weeks.

    Natural Habitat

    • Outside of captivity, mealworms are scavengers that can be found in damp dark places such as warehouses and mills.
