Animals That Live in The Simpson Desert

The Simpson Desert lies in Australia. Despite the harsh conditions, many animals have evolved in such a way that they can strive here. The most common types of animals in this desert are small mammals, reptiles and birds.

    • Mulgaras are tiny nocturnal mice that typically live in sand dunes.

    Eryean Grasswren

    • These small brown birds can be found in dense grassy areas. The male birds are known for their loud singing.

    Sand-Sliding Skinks

    • These lizards are often mistaken for snakes because they are long, slender and their legs are barely visible. They get all the water they need from their food.

    Water-Holding Frog

    • The water-holding frog spends most of its life in hiding. It will come out after a heavy rain to lay its eggs in a temporary pool of water.

    • These small gray mice can often be found in sand dunes. Their hind legs are similar to that of a rabbit's.
