Things You'll Need
- Digital recorder
Instructions
Purchase a quality digital recorder. Although analog recorders will work, the quality will suffer. If you are serious about capturing EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) it is worth the added cost to purchase a digital recorder you can count on.
Purchase a supply of batteries. It is not unusual for batteries to suddenly go dead in the middle of an investigation. Be sure you have extra on hand if this happens to you.
Set the recorder on record and let it run while you do a walk though of the area. Do not use the voice activated recording.
State the day, time, and place you are recording at the beginning of the tape. Be sure to include who is present in the home. This will save a lot of hassles later if you pick up a recording. If you are sure who is in the home at the time of the recording, you will be in a better position to analyze any EVPs you may pick up.
Allow a few moments between questions. If a spirit does respond, you don't want the EVP to be overpowered with your own voice rattling off questions faster than anyone could answer.
Leave the recorder in an area that has been reported to have activity and leave the area. Be sure to indicate that you are reentering the room when you return to pick it up.
Review the recording to determine whether or not you have recorded any EVPs. In the event that you do record voices or unusual sounds, always double check with others to be sure you have not accidentally recorded sounds or voices created by others who were present.
Always back up any EVPs you catch. Never rely on just one copy. If it is lost or damaged you will loose any evidence you may have captured.
