How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in the Kitchen

What are fruit flies, and where do they come from? This is a common question about those annoying insects that end up in our kitchens. It would seem that they come out of no where! Hovering around our bowls of fruit and causing a nuisance. All it takes is one piece of fruit that is beginning to ferment, and wham! They're back! So aside from throwing away the bad fruit, what can you do to rid your home of these pesky creatures? Well, you have to build a trap. Fruit flies mysteriously enter your home through cracks, window screens, under doors and virtually anywhere that a tiny being can enter. But they don't leave that way, so an apple cider vinegar trap is your best bet.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any old fermenting or rotting fruit from your fruit bowl. Half fill a jar with apple cider vinegar. The fruit files are very attracted to apple cider vinegar, so it is a great bait for the trap.

    • 2

Cover the jar with a piece of plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band. Poke a few small holes in the top of the saran wrap with a toothpick. The fruit flies will find there way in through the little holes, just like they do everything else, but they won't be able to find their way out and will remain trapped in the jar.

Place the jar on your kitchen counter or it in an inconspicuous place. The fruit flies will still be able to find it. Leave the jar out for a few days, and it should take care of your fruit fly problem. When you are satisfied that your unwelcome guests have all been trapped, discard the jar.
