How to Vaccinate an Emu

Emus are fascinating exotic birds. If you choose to keep emus on your farm, it is important to remember that they are susceptible to many of the same diseases as more common farm animals. In areas where equine encephalitis (a disease spread by mosquitos) is common, a bivalent vaccine for eastern and western equine encephalitis must be given every six months. Keeping your emu vaccinated will help keep your exotic little friend healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Have a helper hold and soothe the bird by gently stroking it while speaking in gentle tones.

    • 2

Separate the emu's feathers on the upper thigh. Insert the needle gently into the fleshy part of the thigh.

    • 3

Inject the vaccine slowly and smoothly. Intramuscular injections can be quite painful so it's important to be gentle for the bird's comfort.

    • 4

Remove the needle and sterilize the injection area with an alcohol swap. Dab the alcohol on liberally but gently.

    • 5

Cover the injection area with a sterile bandage, making sure the bandage stays tight against the wound. Take your time. The bird's feathers can get in the way so this can be tricky. Remember that you just gave the bird an intramuscular injection, and that the injection site is still sore so the emu might fight to get away.
