How to Own a Centipede

Centipedes are fast, aggressive and stunning to look at. If you're the type of pet owner who can do without the touchy-feely care needed by dogs and cats, raising centipedes may be the perfect hobby for you. Look, don't touch is the key if you want to successfully own a "pede." Share your interest in these intricately patterned invertebrates with other entomologists, or teach someone you love to love bugs.

Instructions

  1. Display Your Centipede

    • 1

Learn about the species of centipede you wish to own and determine its environmental needs. Consider its size, native habitat, the climate in which you live and the available materials for creating a shelter.

    • 2

Purchase a large aquarium, 10 to 20 gallons in size, with plenty of floor space for your centipede to wander.

    • 3

Choose a substrate, or bedding, depending on whether your centipede is a desert or tropical species. Follow reference advice or ask the seller for a recommendation.

    • 4

Use a red or blue bulb to view centipedes' nocturnal behavior. They can't see this kind of light, so it is not a deterrent.

    • 5

Add driftwood or bark for interest, or include live plants to encourage humidity.

    Care for Your Centipede

    • 6

Mist the substrate as needed to preserve humidity for your tropical centipede.

    • 7

Feed live or thawed frozen prey as directed by a reliable guide or supplier of invertebrate pet food, such as Dr. Jungle's Animal World (see Resources below).
