Feeding & Water Needs of a Common Striped Scorpion

The striped scorpion, or Centruroides vittatus, is the most commonly found scorpion in the world. Some believe it to be the first land animal. This tiny scorpion can survive in harsh desert heat or freezing temperatures. Although the animal needs little food and water to survive, the common striped scorpion would not make a good pet.
  1. About Striped Scorpion

    • The striped scorpion is also called "wood scorpion," "plains scorpion" or "bark scorpion." This is a tiny species, growing only one to three inches in length. The body is yellow to dark brown with two stripes running lengthwise down the back. The striped scorpion holds its tail to the side rather than curled over its back. The sting from some varieties of striped scorpions can be dangerous.

    Where Found

    • The striped scorpion is the most widespread species of scorpion, found in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Missouri. The animal prefers dry areas with plenty of loose rocks to provide shelter from the daytime sun. Scorpions are nocturnal, meaning they are active and feed at night.

    Water Needs

    • Scorpions thrive in dry conditions and need little water. Desert species get all the moisture they need from the air. A small, shallow dish of water should be available for scorpions kept in captivity. Use a spray bottle to mist the scorpion and its habitat once a week. When misting, areas should be damp but not wet, to prevent unwanted mold growth.

    Diet

    • Scorpions are carnivorous and prefer to hunt and kill their dinner. Soft-bodied insects and arachnids are the most common prey. Scorpions will eat spiders, ants, crickets and worms. A hungry scorpion might target smaller scorpions.

Scorpions do not need to eat frequently. A cricket or two per week is enough to keep a scorpion healthy. Scorpions are a hearty species that can survive extreme conditions. According to Michele Schlesinger of the Missouri Department of Conservation, scorpions can go as long as nine months without food or water. Overfeeding a scorpion can cause health problems and death.
