How to Buy Live Venomous Bugs

Venomous bugs have become increasingly popular for those interested in the study of entomology and as unique and generally easy-to-care-for pets. The most readily available venomous insects for sale to the general public are scorpions and tarantulas. Some insect suppliers also offer centipedes for sale. You can purchase live venomous bugs from online sources, but bugs need to be shipped rapidly, and shipping costs can be quite expensive. Pet stores have scorpions and tarantulas for sale, and entomology departments at universities may provide sources for more exotic insects.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a species of venomous insect you are interested in purchasing. Find out the scientific name for the insect of your choice, as it will make Internet searches easier for harder-to-find species.

    • 2

Research the housing and safe care requirements for the insect you want to purchase. While most of the readily available venomous insects aren̵7;t deadly to humans, some insect suppliers do offer highly dangerous species. Be sure you know the dangers of ownership of these creatures and are prepared to keep them properly contained.

    • 3

Search Internet websites offering venomous bugs for sale. Some of the largest suppliers with the most exotic species available include Reptiles-N-Critters.com, BlackwaterReptiles.com, KenTheBugGuy.com and ReptileCity.com. Be prepared to pay at least $50 or more in shipping costs when purchasing live insects online.

Shop at local pet stores, many of which offer scorpions and tarantulas for sale and also sell the supplies necessary to keep them properly.

    • 5

Search the classified advertisements at bug-lover websites. At least one insect site, PetBugs.com, has a classified advertising section where bug aficionados offer bugs for sale and trade.

    • 6

Contact a university entomology department. If you are interested in a specific species you can̵7;t find at stores, through private parties or online, call the entomology department and ask for contact information for venomous insect suppliers.
