Are emus protected in the wild?
Emus, native to Australia, are protected under Commonwealth and state governments. The Wildlife Conservation Act protects emus across the country, while in various states, additional legislation and regulations, specifically for native animal protection or national parks, provide them further safeguards. These laws ensure sustainable population management, habitat preservation, and prevent harm to their populations. Emus are deemed significant to Australia's natural diversity and have cultural importance for Indigenous communities. However, hunting within Indigenous communities under traditional customary laws may fall outside these regulations where permitted. Nonetheless, emus have significant legal protection aimed at safeguarding their continued existence in the wild.
