How do humpback wales collect krill when it is dispersed?
Humpbacks whales primarily feed on krill, but they do not typically collect krill when it is dispersed. Instead, they specialize in feeding on dense aggregations of krill. During the feeding process, known as lunge feeding, humpback whales swiftly swim towards a concentrated krill patch with an open mouth and distended throat pouch. Then, they engulf a massive mouthful of water and krill, expanding their mouth and surrounding pleats to accommodate the food intake. The water passes through specialized baleen plates in their mouth, filtering the krill while expelling the water. This efficient filter-feeding mechanism allows humpback whales to consume substantial amounts of krill effectively when encountering dense krill patches in their feeding grounds.
