How many different fox breeds are there?

There is only one true fox species: the red fox (Vulpes vulpes).

However, there are many different subspecies of red foxes, each with slight variations in appearance and geographic location. These subspecies are often referred to as "breeds" in a casual sense.

Here's why it's important to clarify:

* Species refers to a group of animals that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

* Subspecies are distinct populations within a species that have evolved slightly different traits due to isolation or adaptation.

So, while we don't have distinct "breeds" of foxes like we do with dogs, there are many fascinating variations within the red fox species.
