Here's why:
* Hermit crabs are crustaceans, but not all crustaceans reproduce the same way. Crabs that live in the ocean reproduce by laying eggs. Hermit crabs, on the other hand, are adapted to a semi-terrestrial lifestyle. They don't lay eggs in the water.
* Hermit crabs are dioecious, meaning they have separate sexes. However, their reproductive organs are not fully developed and they cannot reproduce sexually.
* They have a complex life cycle involving multiple larval stages, and this process cannot be completed in captivity.
So, while hermit crabs are fascinating creatures, they don't produce baby crabs in the way we typically think of.
