Do Hawaiian Monk Seals have any enemies?
Hawaiian monk seals face several predators in their natural environment. Among their adversaries are sharks, particularly tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier), which are known to prey on monk seals, especially young pups. Other potential predators include Galapagos sharks (Carcharhinus galapagensis) and great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). Killer whales (Orcinus orca) have also been recorded attacking and killing monk seals. Additionally, feral dogs and introduced predators like rats and mongooses can pose threats to seal pups on land, competing for food resources or directly preying on young seals. Conservation efforts and management strategies are implemented to protect Hawaiian monk seals from these predators and ensure their survival and population recovery.
