This unique ability is due to the structure of its neck vertebrae. Unlike other baleen whales, right whales have more flexible neck vertebrae which allows them to move their heads in a wider range of motion.
This adaptation is thought to be beneficial for the right whale because it allows them to:
* Feed more efficiently: They can use their heads to sweep their baleen plates through the water, collecting more food.
* Maneuver in tight spaces: The flexibility helps them navigate through dense plankton patches or near shorelines.
* Escape predators: It allows them to turn quickly to avoid attacks.
