What are the types of cougars?

There is only one species of cougar, known scientifically as Puma concolor.

While there are subspecies of cougar, they are all the same species:

* Puma concolor concolor (Eastern Cougar): Found in eastern North America, but now considered extirpated from the eastern United States.

* Puma concolor couguar (Florida Panther): Found in Florida, critically endangered.

* Puma concolor costaricensis (Central American Cougar): Found in Central America.

* Puma concolor puma (Andean Cougar): Found in the Andes Mountains of South America.

* Puma concolor concolor (South American Cougar): Found in South America, outside of the Andes.

* Puma concolor stanleyana (Mountain Lion): Found in western North America.

* Puma concolor cabrerae (Patagonian Puma): Found in Patagonia.

Other names for cougars:

* Mountain lion

* Puma

* Panther (although this term is also used for other big cats)

* Catamount

So, while there are different subspecies of cougar, they are all part of the same species, Puma concolor.
