Did monkeys or dogs go to space first?

Neither monkeys nor dogs went to space first. The first living creature to go to space was a dog named Laika. She was launched aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957.

While monkeys were sent into space later, notably by the United States, Laika was the first animal to make the journey.
