What kind of species are gorillas?

Gorillas are primates belonging to the family Hominidae, which also includes humans, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Within the family, gorillas are classified as great apes.

Specifically, gorillas are divided into two species:

* Western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla): further divided into two subspecies, the western lowland gorilla and the Cross River gorilla.

* Eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei): further divided into two subspecies, the eastern lowland gorilla and the mountain gorilla.
