Here's why it's a little more complex than a simple number:
* Marsupials: Red kangaroos are marsupials, meaning they give birth to very underdeveloped young that finish developing in a pouch.
* Unique Reproduction: A female red kangaroo can become pregnant again while still nursing a joey in her pouch. This means a female can be pregnant with a second joey before the first one has even left the pouch.
* Long Gestation: The gestation period for a red kangaroo is only about 33 days. However, the joey will stay in the pouch for around 150-230 days.
So, while a female red kangaroo only gives birth to one joey at a time, she can have a second joey developing in her uterus and a joey in her pouch, making it seem like she has more than one offspring at once.
