When were Capuchin monkeys first found and named?

Capuchin monkeys were first described by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, in 1766.

While the exact date of their discovery is unknown, Buffon's description of the "Sapajou à capuchon" (hooded sapajou) in his "Histoire Naturelle" is considered the first formal recognition of the species.

The name "Capuchin" comes from the hooded robes worn by Capuchin friars, which resemble the monkeys' distinctive dark coloration around the head.
