What is a beard ape?

A 'beard ape' is a hypothetical primate cryptid that is said to inhabit the forests of North America. It is described as a large, hairy ape-like creature with a beard. Despite numerous reports of sightings, there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of the beard ape.
