Why are pandas near extinction?
The primary reason for the giant panda's vulnerability to extinction is its extremely low reproductive rate. Pandas reach sexual maturity at a relatively advanced age for mammals, usually between the ages of four and six, and then mate and reproduce infrequently. Additionally, females typically only give birth once every two to three years, and usually they only have one offspring per birth and may reject or neglect their cubs. Consequently, population growth occurs at a slow rate. Other factors impacting their survival include loss of habitat due to development and expansion of agriculture, and poaching.
