Where did the platypus originate?

The platypus, a unique and fascinating mammal, is believed to have originated in Australia.

While its exact evolutionary history is still being researched, scientists believe that the platypus evolved from a common ancestor with other monotremes (egg-laying mammals) that lived in the supercontinent Gondwana over 100 million years ago.

As Gondwana broke apart, Australia became isolated, allowing the platypus to evolve in relative isolation, developing its distinctive features.
