There are four living species of tapirs found in the Americas and Southeast Asia:
* Brazilian tapir: Found in the Amazon rainforest of South America.
* Mountain tapir: Found in the Andes Mountains of South America.
* Baird's tapir: Found in Central America and parts of Mexico.
* Malay tapir: Found in Southeast Asia.
However, some extinct species of tapirs have been identified from fossils, indicating that the group has a long evolutionary history.
It's important to clarify that "extinct" refers to species that are no longer living. While some tapir species have gone extinct in the past, the four living species are still very much alive and face threats such as habitat loss and poaching.
