Here's why:
* Tail development: A joey's tail is still developing and isn't fully grown or strong enough to hold their weight.
* Prehensile tails: Only adult opossums have prehensile tails, which are strong and muscular. These tails are adapted for gripping branches and are used for balance and climbing.
Instead of hanging, young opossums rely on their mother for support. They spend their first few months of life living in their mother's pouch, clinging to her teats for nourishment and protection.
So, while adult opossums are known for their impressive tail-hanging abilities, young opossums still have a lot of growing to do before they can master that skill!
