What is diprotodon optatum?
Diprotodon optatum was a giant wombat that lived in South Australia between 1.6 and 0.43 million years ago. It is the largest known marsupial, weighing up to 2,750 kilograms (6,060 lb). Diprotodon optatum was herbivorous, and its diet consisted mainly of grasses and leaves. It was a solitary animal and probably lived in open woodlands or grasslands. Diprotodon optatum became extinct during the Pleistocene epoch, most likely due to climate change and competition from other herbivores.
